🤔 What is Data Privacy Week?
According to the National Cybersecurity Alliance, "The goal of Data Privacy Week is to spread awareness about online privacy. We think data privacy should be a priority both for individuals and organizations. Our goal is twofold: we want to help citizens understand that they have the power to manage their data and we want to help organizations understand why it is important that they respect their users’ data.”

MERRY'S PERSPECTIVE
Fight For Your Rights
In the spirit of this week, Privacy Consultant Merry Marwig weighs in on how people in the US can advocate for their privacy rights.
"There are dozens of articles helping people configure their phone and computer settings to better respect their privacy wishes (how nice if these privacy functions were on by default... a story for another day). Another great way to protect your privacy? Get laws on your side. Can you commit to helping bring privacy rights to fellow residents across the US?
Right now, California, Virginia, Colorado, Connecticut, and Utah have more expansive privacy laws in the US on the books (covering about 20% of the US population).
Your activism can help move the needle on current proposed privacy laws in New York, New Jersey, Tennessee, Indiana, Kentucky, Oregon, Oklahoma, Massachusetts, and Mississippi (covering another ~13% of the US population).
Reach out to your elected officials and tell them that how your personal information is collected, used, sold, and shared matters to you and you want to see privacy protections enshrined in law."
ICYMI, President Biden announced that he's holding Big Tech accountable in last week's Wall Street Journal op-ed. DataGrail CEO Daniel Barber weighs in on where Biden gets it right and where he misses the mark in Fast Company.
Alex Krylov reflects on the past year and gazes into the crystal ball of privacy and data protection. Check out the blog to see Alex's bets on the future of GPC, a federal US privacy law, and VCDPA's influence.
